This year, the World Series of Poker will host a $1 million buy-in tournament, the largest in history, called The Big One for One Drop. It is estimated that the tournament, which will take place from July 1 through 3, 2012, will award a $12,266,668 first-place prize. This prize was recently announced after eight more players confirmed their participation, bringing the total to 30.

Day 1 of the World Series of Poker Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs Main Event kicked off with two starting flights on Saturday. On Day 1a, 192 players took to the felt and 96 advanced to Day 2. Day 1b began with 88 players, and 42 moved on to Monday’s day of play. Casey Cavanaugh has the overall chip lead with a staggering 196,700, which is 60,000 more than his closest competitor.

PokerStars Finalizes 2012 SCOOP Schedule

PokerStars has finalized the schedule for the 2012 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP). This year, 40 events will each offer three buy-in levels, meaning 120 SCOOP tournaments will take place from Sunday, May 6 and Sunday, May 20, culminating in a Main Event for each level:

  • Low: $109 Main Event
  • Medium: $1,050 Main Event
  • High: $10,300 Main Event

Each week, the Global Poker Index publishes the standings of the top 1,000 players in its Player of the Year race. Once a month, PokerNews will take an in-depth look at the top 10 players’ results and the recent tournaments that have caused a splash in the standings.

A player’s score is comprised of up to 11 tournament results that begin during the calendar year. Of those 11 results, up to six will come from Jan. 1 through June 30, and up to five will be from tournaments starting between July 1 and Dec. 31. Like the Global Poker Index Rankings, all tournaments must have a buy-in of at least $1,500 and contain at least 21 entrants to be eligible in comprising a player’s score.

The $1-million buy-in event will be the largest poker tournament ever held, with a projected eight-figure first prize. Now, the WSOP is offering players without an astronomical bankroll the opportunity to satellite into the event for as little as $65.

New Jersey Senate Committee Approves Online Gambling Bill

A New Jersey Senate committee passed a bill on Tuesday that would allow online wagering on casino games in the Garden State, the Associated Press reports.

The bill, sponsored by state Sens. Ray Lesniak (D-Union) and James Whelan (D-Atlantic), was approved by 11 senators at Tuesday’s hearing, with only Sen. Paul Sarlo (D-Wood-Ridge) abstaining. The next step for the bill is a full Senate and Assembly vote, which likely won’t happen until later this month at the earliest.
